STEM Ambassadors Year 1 Training

Class 1

We talked about...

  • introduced ourselves and talked a bit about why we it’s important to feel comfortable introducing ourselves and getting to know our students.
    • Hint: great learning can happen when you help to create safe relationships with your students
  • We also talked about why you might be here and the expectations of the program
    • Be Brave, Be strong/resilient, Be wise/inclusive
  • Lastly we talked a bit about the Pit of Success – understanding that in order for students to go into the unknown territory they first have to feel safe – however this territory leads to real learning.
    • We talked about a time in our lives when we really felt it was easy to learnguidelines for when we are in class
  • introduced the structure of the class

Asynchronous work 4/28

  1. you should create a google site – all of your work will connect to this site from here on out.
    1. Your Google site will introduce yourself and talk about why you are here
  2. Create a lesson to “teach me anything”
    1. Literally think through how you would teach someone any skill or lesson – the write up how you would teach it, or record yourself teaching it
    2. Add a space on your google site to put your lesson

Want to set up your google site? -- you can use this youtube video to help you get started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPzJzAScdKQ

Class 2

  • As a STEM ambassador it is our job to build a classroom that promotes a Culture of Learning
    • In this classroom students should feel comfortable to think about things different ways, try different methods, and know that they can share ideas
    • In this classroom we recognize that every student has unique gifts and talents and we bring our unique perspectives into the space
  • To build that Culture of Learning we also need to each have a growth mindset and recognize that we are always growing and learning
    • Building life long learners is the goal!
    • As teachers we should try to recognize where students are and help lead and guide them towards new learning
  • If we do this well we will hopefully help build our students STEM Identity
    • We want students to have a positive STEM Identity with traits such as
      • “I don’t know how to do that yet but I will figure it out”
      • “It’s ok to fail- I can just try again”
      • “I like learning new things”
      • “I’m a problem solver”
  • These concepts are all in line with the engineering and design process – a key component for STEM/STEAM

Your Homework is...

Asynchronous work 5/5 :

  • Look at your classmates work – assess it – how can you help make it a better lesson? (How will you assess your students work and know if they are learning?)
  • Think about your own classroom and how will you create a culture of learning – develop a tool that will help you do that.

Class 3

We talked about...

  • We talked about how each of us solves problem differently and as teachers we need to be prepared to adjust to different ways of thinking to help students solve problems. This means that when students are not connecting with one way of problem solving to try a different one or to present them with different options of how to get started.
  • We spoke about Maker centered learning and how that journey can be messy. This messy process can help our learners create learner agency. This means that our students have some say in how they learn and what they learn. This helps create curious life long learners.
  • In order to facilitate this type of classroom you as teachers should:
    • Create a safe framework for students – what are the boundaries? What is the structure for class (ie consistent beginning and end of classes)
    • Pace your class appropriately and give students warning about that pacing
    • Be the guide for your students instead of being the “doer” – ask questions, give them suggestions about how they might approach the problem

Your Homework is...

  • Make a https://scratch.mit.edu/ animation where you are the teacher and you are guiding someone through the maker process – how would you be the guide and not the doer?
  • Pick one of the lessons and look at it – describe how you would “Pace” the lesson and how you would support your students through the lesson.
    • Mapmaking lesson
    • Harry the Puffball lesson

We discussed how teaching is a performance, and performances require a lot of practice and preparation, but you can't always predict what's going to happen on stage.  Being a STEM Ambassador will require the ability to think quickly on your feet and you all tested your improv skills by using "Pechaflikr".

For you asynchronous work, you all will be creating your own lesson from scratch.  Read below for a description:

Create a Lesson:

Pick a subject in STEM and create a google slideshow for it. Please feel free to use this Lesson Plan Template as a reference for your project. You can also reference the lesson website to look at what you'll actually be doing this summer.

Please remember that you will not be reading directly from the slideshow when you teach in the classroom.  The slideshow should besupplemental to you as the presenter. At the end of the day you want your students to pay attention to you.

Attach your slideshow to your google website and make sure you change the share settings so that it is accessible to "anyone with a link".

Class 5

  • We can model the behaviors that we want to see including – problem solving methods, emotional and stress management practices, and the engineering and design methods
  • We can be consistent in procedures and processes in our room – developing routine allows students to feel safe and keeping the pacing so that there is not a lot of downtime
  • We can build connection with our students – helping them to feel seen and heard makes that want to engage in the materials
  • We can lead with compassion because each of our students has their own things that they bring into the classroom – remember that behaviors should make us ask “what are they trying to tell me?”

  • 8 - 10 other games: Often there is downtime at the end of class, or things don’t go the way you planned them and you need to be able to pivot quickly. Create a list of 8 - 10 games, prompts, making things that you could use with a group of kids that would be feasible in a makerspace/STEM Room and would continue the mission of “building a culture of learning” or developing student’s “STEM Identity.” (Pechflickr, in my mind, would be one of those examples. Another might be to create the perfect tool for the world's worst villain - silly and fun are good!). Do a few that need no resources and a few that might need limited resources. Try to be as original as possible.
  • Come up with a list of things that kids that age like to help you build connection
  • Write a short email intro to your new site about you and what you hope to do in the classroom. (for site director)
  • Create your own “teacher slide” - introduce yourself and tell us about what you expect in a classroom (for students)

Course Recap

Over the course of the 5 weeks we:

  • Outlined the objective of this program – to have our students (and ourselves) try new things, not to give up, and realize that we are one learning community
  • We talked about helping our students build stem identity through having a growth mindset and helping them be in the zone of proximal development.
  • We discussed that maker and STEM can sometimes be a messy journey, but that we want students to use learner agency to go through the process instead of stressing the product
